Where are you? (whereareyou.world) is a globe of people who work from anywhere. We keep as little about you as we can, and we never show your exact location.
What we collect
- From Google, when you sign in: your name, email address and profile photo. We ask Google for nothing else.
- What you tell us: the city you're in, your field and what you do, one link, and, if you choose, the day you plan to leave.
- Where you've been: when you move to a new city, we keep the previous one with its dates, so people can see where you've worked from.
- A photo you upload, if you replace your Google photo. We shrink it to a small square before it leaves your device.
What other people see
Your name, photo, field, what you do, your city, how long you've been there, your link and your past cities. Your email address is never shown. We only ever place you at your city, never at a street, address or GPS position. If you use "Use my current location", your browser's position is used once to find the nearest town and is not stored.
What we don't do
- No advertising, no tracking pixels, no analytics that follow you around.
- We don't sell or share your data with anyone.
- There's no messaging: people reach you through the one link you choose to share.
Cookies
One cookie keeps you signed in. It holds a signed id, is only sent to our server, and expires after 180 days or when you log out.
Services we rely on
- Google for sign-in, and Google Fonts for the typefaces on the page.
- GeoNames (CC BY 4.0) for the list of cities. Searching for a city sends only what you type to our own server.
Your choices
- Hide your pin at any time from your account menu. Hidden pins are visible to no one.
- Delete your account from your profile. This removes your profile, photo, link and city history from our database straight away.
- Edit anything you've told us whenever you like.
